Victorian Coroner stands down while under investigation
The Victorian Coroner, Judge Sara Hinchey, has temporarily stood down from her position while the Judicial Commission of Victoria investigates a serious complaint about her alleged conduct.
In a statement released this morning, Judge Hinchey said: “I have today notified the Chief Justice, the Chief Judge and the Attorney-General of my decision in order to allow the appropriate process to take place.
“In the interim, I will return to sit in a full-time capacity as a Judge of the County Court. The work of the Coroners Court is critical, particularly to the many Victorian families seeking answers as they mourn the loss of loved ones. I do not wish for this issue to distract from this vital work."
Judge Hinchey said: "In accordance with the Commission’s processes, I am preparing a response to the allegations.
“I will not be commenting further on the matter, however I intend to fully engage with the Commission.”
Deputy state coroner Iain West will act in Judge Hinchey’s capacity while she remains stood down.
The Age has been investigating allegations about dysfunction and bullying within the Coroner’s Court in recent weeks.
The allegations made to the Judicial Commission are serious and involve issues of alleged bullying, threats, inappropriate workplace behaviour and the expenditure of taxpayer funds.
Supporters of Judge Hinchey say she is mortified by the allegations, but is confident that she can defend herself and return to her role.
Attorney General Martin Pakula said in a statement that he had been advised that "the Coroner is the subject of a complaint to the Judicial Commission of Victoria and I have received today’s statement from the Coroner".
"As the matter is before the Commission it would not be appropriate to make any further comment," the statement said.
