A conservative media conspiracy? Judge for yourself
Has there been a conservative media conspiracy against Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull?
Chris Uhlmann, the political editor of Nine News, on Thursday accused certain media commentators of crossing the line from reporting on the leadership spill to becoming active participants.
He also said that “everyone from the Prime Minister on down has pointed out to me that they believe there is a campaign being waged against them”.
Mr Uhlmann named News Corp publications The Australian and The Daily Telegraph, Macquarie Radio station 2GB (part owned by Fairfax Media, publisher of this website) and Sky News as those believed to be against Turnbull.
We thought we’d let you judge for yourself.
We couldn’t get radio and TV transcripts at short notice, but the below is a list of headlines to have appeared on the websites of the The Australian, The Daily Telegraph, and the 2GB websites in the week leading up to Tuesday’s initial leadership ballot, as provided by real-time media monitoring firm Streem.
There were about 730 stories across the three websites that mentioned either Turnbull or challenger Peter Dutton, but we have filtered the list to show only the 260 or so stories that focus on energy policy or the leadership.
A large number of the stories removed were related to the drought, euthanasia laws and Senator Fraser Anning's debut speech to Parliament.
Some of the headlines are from news stories while others are taken from opinion pieces.
