LINCOLN, Neb. After Mollie Tibbetts' death, more and more people are looking for extra security measures they can take to protect themselves when out running or biking.
"I have the Life 360 app on my phone," said Nicole McCormick. "I go running early in the morning, so it makes me feel safer."
McCormick isn't the only one. LPD said it noticed an increase in people discussing safety apps after Tibbetts' murder. Officer Angela Sands downloaded a few on her own phone to test out.
"I just asked people on our LPD twitter, 'What apps do you use?' and I chose the three most popular responses," Sands said.
She tried out NoonLight, BSafe, and LiveSafe. The apps work with GPS location technology to track a person's location and send law enforcement if necessary.
With NoonLight, you hold down a button on your screen until you feel safe. Once you take your finger off the button it sends out an alert. You have ten seconds to enter a code to stop the alert.
"Actually, I did this on my work phone and it turns out the person that had this number before me already had a NoonLight account," Sands said. "It sent me a text asking if I was ok, and when I didn't respond, within 20 seconds, I got a call from a real person asking if I was ok. I was really surprised it was a real person."

Sands said the person knew her exact location and said they would send police to her location if she didn't answer certain security questions.
"Of course, someone else set those up, so I didn't know them," Sands said. "It took some convincing to explain to the woman at their call center what was happening, but it was nice to hear she was pretty forceful about sending police to my location and she knew exactly where I was."
With BSafe and LiveSafe, you have an option to use voice activation.
"Even if your phone is locked, if you have the app going, you just have to say the phrase," Sands said. "I chose, 'I am afraid.' I just say that, and it starts counting down. Then, it records video and audio of your location, and sends it to your emergency contact."
While she was impressed with how well the apps work, Sands said neither she, nor LPD, could endorse one over others. The most important thing, she said, was to be aware of your location.

"These apps are great, and they are designed to make you feel safer, but don't let them distract you," Sands said. "The best thing you can do is to pay attention to your surroundings. And really, these apps take time to have a third party contact police. It's really just faster to skip the app and call us directly."
All the apps are free to download, with additional features that can be purchased. However, if you have an iPhone, you may not even need an app. Rapidly tapping the lock button will allow you to send out an SOS.
If you don't want to use your phone, LPD said you can run or bike with a friend or pet, or carry mace or pepper spray for protection.

LINCOLN, Neb. After Mollie Tibbetts' death, more and more people are looking for extra security measures they can take to protect themselves when out running or biking.
"I have the Life 360 app on my phone," said Nicole McCormick. "I go running early in the morning, so it makes me feel safer."
McCormick isn't the only one. LPD said it noticed an increase in people discussing safety apps after Tibbetts' murder. Officer Angela Sands downloaded a few on her own phone to test out.
"I just asked people on our LPD twitter, 'What apps do you use?' and I chose the three most popular responses," Sands said.
She tried out NoonLight, BSafe, and LiveSafe. The apps work with GPS location technology to track a person's location and send law enforcement if necessary.
With NoonLight, you hold down a button on your screen until you feel safe. Once you take your finger off the button it sends out an alert. You have ten seconds to enter a code to stop the alert.
"Actually, I did this on my work phone and it turns out the person that had this number before me already had a NoonLight account," Sands said. "It sent me a text asking if I was ok, and when I didn't respond, within 20 seconds, I got a call from a real person asking if I was ok. I was really surprised it was a real person."

Sands said the person knew her exact location and said they would send police to her location if she didn't answer certain security questions.
"Of course, someone else set those up, so I didn't know them," Sands said. "It took some convincing to explain to the woman at their call center what was happening, but it was nice to hear she was pretty forceful about sending police to my location and she knew exactly where I was."
With BSafe and LiveSafe, you have an option to use voice activation.
"Even if your phone is locked, if you have the app going, you just have to say the phrase," Sands said. "I chose, 'I am afraid.' I just say that, and it starts counting down. Then, it records video and audio of your location, and sends it to your emergency contact."
While she was impressed with how well the apps work, Sands said neither she, nor LPD, could endorse one over others. The most important thing, she said, was to be aware of your location.

"These apps are great, and they are designed to make you feel safer, but don't let them distract you," Sands said. "The best thing you can do is to pay attention to your surroundings. And really, these apps take time to have a third party contact police. It's really just faster to skip the app and call us directly."
All the apps are free to download, with additional features that can be purchased. However, if you have an iPhone, you may not even need an app. Rapidly tapping the lock button will allow you to send out an SOS.
If you don't want to use your phone, LPD said you can run or bike with a friend or pet, or carry mace or pepper spray for protection.

LINCOLN, Neb. After Mollie Tibbetts' death, more and more people are looking for extra security measures they can take to protect themselves when out running or biking.
"I have the Life 360 app on my phone," said Nicole McCormick. "I go running early in the morning, so it makes me feel safer."
McCormick isn't the only one. LPD said it noticed an increase in people discussing safety apps after Tibbetts' murder. Officer Angela Sands downloaded a few on her own phone to test out.
"I just asked people on our LPD twitter, 'What apps do you use?' and I chose the three most popular responses," Sands said.
She tried out NoonLight, BSafe, and LiveSafe. The apps work with GPS location technology to track a person's location and send law enforcement if necessary.
With NoonLight, you hold down a button on your screen until you feel safe. Once you take your finger off the button it sends out an alert. You have ten seconds to enter a code to stop the alert.
"Actually, I did this on my work phone and it turns out the person that had this number before me already had a NoonLight account," Sands said. "It sent me a text asking if I was ok, and when I didn't respond, within 20 seconds, I got a call from a real person asking if I was ok. I was really surprised it was a real person."

Sands said the person knew her exact location and said they would send police to her location if she didn't answer certain security questions.
"Of course, someone else set those up, so I didn't know them," Sands said. "It took some convincing to explain to the woman at their call center what was happening, but it was nice to hear she was pretty forceful about sending police to my location and she knew exactly where I was."
With BSafe and LiveSafe, you have an option to use voice activation.
"Even if your phone is locked, if you have the app going, you just have to say the phrase," Sands said. "I chose, 'I am afraid.' I just say that, and it starts counting down. Then, it records video and audio of your location, and sends it to your emergency contact."
While she was impressed with how well the apps work, Sands said neither she, nor LPD, could endorse one over others. The most important thing, she said, was to be aware of your location.

"These apps are great, and they are designed to make you feel safer, but don't let them distract you," Sands said. "The best thing you can do is to pay attention to your surroundings. And really, these apps take time to have a third party contact police. It's really just faster to skip the app and call us directly."
All the apps are free to download, with additional features that can be purchased. However, if you have an iPhone, you may not even need an app. Rapidly tapping the lock button will allow you to send out an SOS.
If you don't want to use your phone, LPD said you can run or bike with a friend or pet, or carry mace or pepper spray for protection.
LINCOLN, Neb. After Mollie Tibbetts' death, more and more people are looking for extra security measures they can take to protect themselves when out running or biking.
"I have the Life 360 app on my phone," said Nicole McCormick. "I go running early in the morning, so it makes me feel safer."
McCormick isn't the only one. LPD said it noticed an increase in people discussing safety apps after Tibbetts' murder. Officer Angela Sands downloaded a few on her own phone to test out.
"I just asked people on our LPD twitter, 'What apps do you use?' and I chose the three most popular responses," Sands said.
She tried out NoonLight, BSafe, and LiveSafe. The apps work with GPS location technology to track a person's location and send law enforcement if necessary.
With NoonLight, you hold down a button on your screen until you feel safe. Once you take your finger off the button it sends out an alert. You have ten seconds to enter a code to stop the alert.
"Actually, I did this on my work phone and it turns out the person that had this number before me already had a NoonLight account," Sands said. "It sent me a text asking if I was ok, and when I didn't respond, within 20 seconds, I got a call from a real person asking if I was ok. I was really surprised it was a real person."
