Woman fights for life after car crash at Miranda netball court
A group of 10 men lifted a four-wheel-drive off the ground on Saturday morning in a desperate effort to rescue a seriously injured woman pinned behind it at a Sutherland Shire netball ground.
The Bellingarra Road courts in Miranda were full of parents and children gathered for Saturday morning sport when the driver of the four-wheel drive reportedly hit the accelerator instead of the brake while trying to park, knocking one man to the ground and pinning the woman between the vehicle and a fence.
The woman is in a critical condition with head injuries and a broken leg. The man also suffered head injuries. Both are in their 60s and were taken to St George Hospital.
Stephanie Wise, an off-duty paramedic who was at the grounds with her daughter, said she went to the scene after hearing “the lady over the loud-speaker with the quiver in her voice yelling for the doctor”.
Ms Wise said the man who had been struck was lying away from the car, while the woman was pinned between the car and the fence.
“And then there were 10 guys gently yelling at each other, saying "we’ve got to move the car, we’ve got to move the car,’” Ms Wise said.
“Then they all kind of lifted this relatively big four-wheel-drive, and pushed it a metre. And then kind of pulled her out of the fence.”
Ms Wise said she and another off-duty paramedic attended to the man and woman.
Another witness, Sue, said the incident occurred right near the canteen. “There were loads of people around,” she said.
Chief Inspector Gary Ford, from Sutherland police, said it appeared that the 73-year-old driver hit the accelerator instead of the brake while reversing.
"In doing so she’s reversed into two people standing next to a motorcycle," Inspector Ford said. "That motorcycle has been knocked over. One of those pedestrians was trapped underneath the motor vehicle for some time, between the vehicle and the fence, before some members of the public that were here at the courts were able to release her from that position.
"I believe there was a number of members of the public who came and pulled the fence away from the person to make some space for them to be able to get out," he said.
Inspector Ford said a "lot of" off-duty emergency services workers at the courts were able to grant assistance. Police said the driver stopped after the crash and was speaking with police.
