'On death row': Julie Bishop savages Karl Stefanovic
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has skewered Karl Stefanovic on the Today show, after the host speculated about the future of Malcolm Turnbull's prime ministership.
The breakfast TV host opened his interview with Bishop on Wednesday with the pointed question: "What is it like talking to a man [Turnbull] on death row?"
But the barb failed to land, with Bishop returning fire with a fiery observation of her own.
"Well, I'm talking to you Karl," she said. "What are you suggesting?"
The deputy leader of the Liberal party appeared to be referring to Stefanovic's turbulent year. Back in March, a private conversation between the TV host and his brother Peter was secretly recorded and later shared with magazines and newspapers.
During the conversation, which occured in the back of an Uber, Stefanovic took aim at his employer Channel Nine's management and his Today co-host Georgie Gardner. He was later forced to apologise.
Then, of course, there is the fact Today has continued to be thrashed by Seven rival Sunrise. On a week-by-week basis, the Nine program has come out on top just once this year, according to an analysis of the ratings in the five biggest cities.
It's not the first time Bishop has slapped down Stefanovic live on air. Earlier this year, she rubbished suggestions she held any animosity towards former Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
"Tony is getting on with the job of being a backbencher," she said at the time. "He is a former leader, he has opinions, but the majority of the party room back Malcolm Turnbull."
Stefanovic replied that Bishop was saying the word 'backbencher' with "real venom".
"Not at all," the Foreign Minister fired back. "I just said backbencher. That's how you say it... I'm trying to work out how to say it differently."
