Man suspected of killing cyclist in South Yarra hit-run arrested in the CBD
A man suspected of the hit-run killing of a Dutch national on a bicycle in South Yarra has been arrested in Melbourne's CBD.
The man, 26, was arrested in Bourke Street about 5.30pm after a member of the public recognised him from images released by police on Sunday.
Police say the man, who has no fixed address, is being interviewed. No charges have been laid.
A witness who saw police arresting the man told The Age the man looked "dishevelled" and was in handcuffs.
"I was walking down from Melbourne Central on Elizabeth Street when I noticed flashing lights. When I got there they had him surrounded at the entrance to Rebel and Fitness First on Elizabeth Street," witness Jamie said.
"They had him in the doorway, about 10 police officers were in the doorway, holding him in handcuffs and the other was going through a bag.
"He was pretty dishevelled, he was in the same clothes from the security photos. As soon as I saw the Adidas pants, I triggered straight away."
He said the man seemed calm and was not struggling.
"He was just standing there, he couldn't go anywhere," he told The Age.
Earlier on Monday, police said the suspect was being harboured in Melbourne’s inner suburbs.
Detective Inspector Stuart McGregor says police had narrowed their search down to four suspects who matched the description of the man caught on CCTV near Sunday's crash site.
It comes as the 27-year-old victim’s family makes the journey to Australia from the Netherlands to meet with police. For now, they have asked for privacy.
Police said the stolen white Mercedes sedan had been travelling south along Chapel Street, near Grosvenor Street, when it collided with several parked cars, another moving car and the cyclist, about 10am on Sunday.
The female cyclist was treated by emergency services but died at the scene.
Bystanders helped the Mercedes driver from the damaged vehicle before he calmly removed his belongings from inside and fled on foot.
He was last seen running along Simmons Street away from Chapel Street.
Police said the Mercedes had been stolen during a burglary in Elsternwick a week earlier on August 5 but hadn’t come to the attention of authorities until the crash.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit crimestoppersvic.com.au.
